Setting up your Google Business Profile service area correctly ensures that prospective local customers know where your company operates while keeping your profile compliant with Google guidelines. Depending on whether your company meets clients at a dedicated location, travels directly to customer sites, or handles a combination of both, Google provides specific rules regarding whether your street address must be displayed or hidden.
Understanding Service-Area and Hybrid Business Models
Before modifying profile settings, businesses must determine their operational classification under Google guidelines for representing your business. Google recognizes distinct models for companies serving regional territories:
- Service-area businesses: These companies visit or deliver directly to clients but do not serve customers at their business address, such as mobile plumbers or home cleaning operations. If you do not serve customers at your business address, you must remove your street address from your profile. Google states that service-area businesses should hide their address from customers and should have one profile for the central office or location.
- Hybrid businesses: These operations serve clients at their physical business address while also directly visiting or delivering to them, such as a dine-in restaurant providing local food delivery or an auto repair shop offering roadside assistance. Hybrid businesses can show their storefront address, set hours for when staff is present, and designate a service area.
Google maintains specific eligibility exceptions. If a business does not have permanent on-site signage, it is not eligible as a storefront and should be listed as a service-area business. Businesses showing their address on Google should maintain permanent fixed signage displaying their business name. Furthermore, businesses offering products or services with age requirements, such as alcohol, cannabis, or weapons, are not permitted as service-area businesses without a storefront and need to have a storefront. If a company rents a physical mailing address but does not operate out of that location—known as a virtual office—that location is not eligible for a Business Profile unless that office is staffed during business hours. Similarly, businesses cannot list a co-working space office unless it maintains clear signage, receives customers during stated business hours, and is staffed during business hours by company staff.
Rules for Defining Service Area Boundaries
When selecting regions, business owners must observe defined constraints documented in Google’s service area management instructions:
- No radius settings: You cannot configure your service area as a radius distance around your facility. Profiles that previously utilized radius distances cannot edit them in that format; instead, you must specify territories using cities, postal codes, or other regional area designations.
- Territory limits: A single profile can feature up to 20 service areas.
- Driving time boundaries: The outer boundaries of your profile’s overall service area should not extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based, though Google notes that larger service areas may be appropriate for some businesses.
- Multiple locations: Service-area businesses can generally only have one profile for the whole area they serve. However, if you maintain distinct locations with separate service areas and separate staff stationed at each location, you are permitted one profile for each location.
Steps to Add, Edit, or Remove Service Areas
To update the service territory for a hypothetical residential electrician or emergency locksmith, follow these documented steps:
- Navigate to your Business Profile.
- Select Edit profile, then select Location.
- Next to Service area, select Edit.
- Select a suggested area or enter a specific city, postal code, or designated region. You can set up to 20 individual service areas.
- To remove a region your business no longer serves, review Selected service areas and remove any outdated locations.
- Select Save to apply changes.
If you need to remove all designated service areas entirely, you must be a storefront business with your physical business address included on your Business Profile.
Limitations and Implementation Suggestions
When updating your service areas, keep several practical constraints in mind. Edits submitted to Google are subject to review, and approved service area changes may take up to 48 hours before displaying publicly on your Business Profile.
As an optional practical suggestion, when transitioning from a storefront model to a pure service-area business, verify your address field before saving your territory list. If you serve customers at your business address alongside travel services, enter both your address and service area. If you do not serve customers at that address, remove your address and enter only your service area. Google also notes that eligible service-area businesses seeking additional local visibility can optionally choose to run Local Services ads to generate customer phone calls and messages.
